Hot Potatoes
 A suite of authoring tools to help educators, teachers and
materials-writers putting educational material on the Web. The Hot
Potatoes applets create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer,
gap-fill, crossword and jumbled-sentence exercises using HTML and
JavaScript - but you don't need to know any HTML or JavaScript to use
them. The applications support the use of accented characters for
languages other than English. Hot Potatoes is now freeware. The complete version of the programs is now available for free and you may use it for any purpose or project you like. It is not open-source. download

 Is a popular and comprehensive chemical drawing
package, intended for home and educational use only. Since 1998,
ACD/Labs has provided ChemSketch freeware to > 330 academic
institutions worldwide. Every day many downloads from the
ACD/Labs Web site further distributes the power of this chemical
structure drawing package to desktops around the world. Among many
other features, this product offers IUPAC chemical naming (up to 50
functional atoms); prediction of logP; comprehensive report creation;
tautomer recognition; 2D structure cleaning; 3D optimization and
viewing; drawing of polymers, organometallics, and Markush structures;
and as well as access to the chemistry Web search engines PubChem,

Scilab
 Scilab was designed to be a scientific software package for numerical
computations providing a powerful open computing environment for
engineering and scientific applications. Scilab is an open source software. Since 1994 it has been
distributed freely along with the source code via the Internet. It is
currently used in educational and industrial environments around the
world. Scilab is now the responsibility of the Scilab Consortium,

Gnuplot
 Is a portable command-line driven
interactive data and function plotting utility for UNIX,
IBM OS/2, MS Windows, DOS, Macintosh, VMS, Atari and many other
platforms. The software is copyrighted but freely distributed (i.e., you don't
have to pay for it). It was originally intended as to allow scientists and students to visualize mathematical functions and
data. It does this job pretty well, but has grown to support many
non-interactive uses, including web scripting and integration
as a plotting engine for third-party applications like Octave.
Gnuplot has been supported and under development since 1986. Gnuplot supports many types of plots in either 2D and 3D.
It can draw using lines, points, boxes, contours, vector fields, surfaces,
and various associated text. It also supports various specialized plot types. download
WordWeb
 This thesaurus/dictionary can be used to look up words from almost any
program. In addition to displaying sense definitions and synonyms,
WordWeb can find sets of related words. The database has more than
150,000 root words and 120,000 synonym sets, many proper nouns,
pronunciations, and usage tags. WordWeb works off line, but when online
you can also quickly view Web references such as the Wikipedia
encyclopedia. WordWeb is a handy utility that gives you the definition, synonyms, and
antonyms of any given word without requiring you to go online, though
it can connect to the Internet for expanded functionality should you

Maxima
 Is a system for the manipulation of symbolic and numerical
expressions, including differentiation, integration, Taylor series,
Laplace transforms, ordinary differential equations, systems of linear
equations, polynomials, and sets, lists, vectors, matrices, and
tensors. Maxima yields high precision numeric results by using exact
fractions, arbitrary precision integers, and variable precision
floating point numbers. Maxima can plot functions and data in two and
three dimensions. The Maxima source code can be compiled on many
systems, including Windows, Linux, and MacOS X. The source code for all
systems and precompiled binaries for Windows and Linux are available at
the SourceForge file manager. Maxima is a descendant of Macsyma, the legendary computer algebra system developed in the late 1960s at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. download

GCompris
 Is an educational software suite comprising of numerous activities for
children aged 2 to 10. Some of the activities are game orientated, but
nonetheless still educational. Below you can find a list of categories
with some of the activities available in that category. Computer discovery: keyboard, mouse, different mouse gesture. Algebra: table memory, enumeration, double entry table, mirror image.

 Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer.

It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked
eye, binoculars or a telescope. Stellarium displays stars,

 Google Earth combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google

Celestia
 Celestia is a space simulation that allows you to travel within the
solar system, out to the stars, and beyond the Milky Way galaxy.
Possible destinations include over 100,000 stars, nearly one hundred
solar system destinations, and sixty recently-discovered extrasolar
planets. Celestia uses OpenGL to render realistic real-time animations
of space travel. Unlike most other space sims, you can fly throughout the cosmos to
hundreds of destinations, including planets, dwarf planets, moons,
asteroids, comets, over 50 spacecraft, stars, nebula, black holes,
pulsars, fictional solar systems complete with their own civilizations. download
NASA World Wind
 World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on
Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar
Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain
in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there. Virtually visit
any place in the world. Look across the Andes, into the Grand Canyon,
over the Alps, or along the African Sahara. Particular focus was
put into the ease of usability so people of all ages can enjoy World
Wind. All one needs to control World Wind is a two button mouse.

Earth3D
 Earth3D is a program that visualizes the earth
in a realtime 3D view. It uses data from NASA, USGS, the
CIA
and the city of Osnabrück. The program is
available as binary for Linux, MacOS X and Windows under the GPL license.
The program's features are: Viewing the earth as a whole. Zooming in until countries,
cities and even single houses become visible (if I had such maps, so this
is currently limited to the city of Osnabrück, Germany). Embedding external data like current
earthquake positions or cloud data. This package is a result from my work and my diploma thesis in
computer science at the Institute of ComputerGraphics at Braunschweig
University of Technology. download
Fle3
 Is a web-based learning environment. To be more specific Fle3 is
server software for computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL).
Fle3 is Open Source. Fle3 is designed to support learner and group centered work that concentrates on
creating and developing expressions of knowledge (i.e. knowledge artefacts) and design.
Fle3 contains three learning tools and several administration tools. Fle3 is easy to localize to different languages (all you need to do is to translate one
file). Currently users may choose their user interfaces language. download

 Is a free drawing program for all operating sytems
that is designed for young children (kids 3 and up). It has a simple,
easy-to-use interface, fun sound effects, and an encouraging cartoon
mascot who helps guide children as they use the program. It provides a
blank canvas and a variety of drawing tools to help your child be
creative. Tux Paint has been translated into nearly 70 languages. An
optional Rubber Stamp collection provides over 250 images which can be
pasted into pictures, to help jump-start the creative process. A
configuration tool for parents and teachers allow Tux Paint to be
adjusted for a child's or school's individual needs. download

Gpredict
 Is a real-time satellite tracking and orbit prediction
application. It can track an unlimited number of satellites and display
their position and other data in lists, tables, maps, and polar plots
(radar view). Gpredict can also predict the time of future passes for a
satellite, and provide you with detailed information about each pass.
Gpredict is different from other satellite tracking
programs in that it allows you to group the satellites into
visualisation modules. Each of these modules can be configured
independently from the others giving you unlimited flexibility
concerning the look and feel of the modules. Naturally, Gpredict will
also allow you to track satellites relatively to different observer
locations - at the same time. Gpredict is free software licensed under the GNU General Public License. download

 Is a JavaScript education application that
runs in any modern internet browser but does not require an internet
connection. The simple controls allow teachers or parents to create
unlimited math crosswords, or supply their own word:hint pairs. Support
has recently been added for French, Spanish, pt-Brasillian, Kiswahili,
and special characters (accents, tildes etc), in general. Some
suggested uses include: cities, countries, lattitudes and longitudes to
teach geography and spherical trig, simultaneously; Periodic table
word:hint pairs; Language; word:hint pairs, for foreign
language learning exercise; Terminology practice with virtually any

 Adun is a free biomolecular simulator developed at the Computational Biophysics and Biochemistry Laboratory, a part of the Research Unit on Biomedical Informatics of the UPF. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License. Adun is a new extendible molecular
simulation program that also includes data management and analysis
capabilities. The Adun molecular simulation
application has been designed from the ground up to cater for a broad
range of users and needs, from computational chemists to experimental
biologists. Adun provides advanced algorithms and protocols for
molecular simulation which can be accessed from an intuitive user
interface but also from a more flexible programmatic level. It is built
on the Adun framework which is a powerful library for creating and
